A Yaphank woman died Thursday, less than two days after she was ejected from an all-terrain vehicle driven by a man who fled the scene, Suffolk police said.
According to Sixth Squad Detective Sergeant Michael Fitzharris, on Tuesday, November 15, just before midnight, Jillian Mapes, 19, was riding on the back of a 2001 Honda ATV, which her friend was driving through a residential street in Ronkonkoma.
The driver, Gregory T. Kiezel, 21, of 6 Winged Foot Drive, Medford, lost control of the vehicle, witnesses told police.
Jillian Mapes was flung from the four-wheel ATV, when Kiezel sped away, Mr. Fitzharris said.
Miss Mapes was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital, where she died about noon yesterday, police said.
The ATV was found less than a mile from the Kayron Drive crash site, Fitzharris said.
Gregory Kiezel finally surrendered to the police Wednesday afternoon.
Mr. Kiezel was charged with leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident with a serious injury, a felony.
According to Mr. Fitzharris, Mr. Kiezel may face additional charges.
