An evening that began with a man's 21st birthday celebration turned tragic when the car he was driving early Tuesday, September 20, slammed into a utility pole, instantly killing his two friends.
Shane P. Nicholson Jr. of New Milford, Pennsylvania, is in the Broome County Jail charged with two counts of second-degree vehicular manslaughter, felonies, and one count of driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor, said investigators with the Broome County Sheriff's Office.
Shane's friends, Richard L. Saab, 23, of Great Bend, and Brian W. Hird, 23, of Hallstead, both of Pennsylvania, were pronounced dead at the scene by Broome County coroner Dr. James Hayes, said Broome County Sheriff's Detective Sgt. Patrick A. Isenburg.
Investigators believe that alcohol and speed definitely were factors in the crash.
Shane Nicholson was taken to Wilson Memorial Regional Medical Center in Johnson City for treatment.
He was released from the hospital, arraigned in Town of Kirkwood Court and sent to jail without bail.
