Crash Shuts Down Tappan Zee Bridge

January 9, 2006

A Bronx man who caught fire yesterday, September 13, in a car crash on the Tappan Zee Bridge jumped into the Hudson River, then was rescued and taken to a hospital.

State police say 44-year-old Escolastico Arzu is in stable condition at Westchester Medical Center.

Authorities say the driver, 41-year-old Angel Norales of the Bronx, was killed in the crash.

Westchester County spokeswoman Susan Tolchin says that a tractor-trailer hit the car from behind at about 3 PM, causing a fire that killed the car's driver, Angel Norales.

Escolastico Arzu was a passenger and when he caught fire he jumped in to water.

The driver of the truck was interviewed and released. No charges were filed.
