Hit-and-run Driver Is Charged

January 18, 2006

A Long Island electrician who was charged with fleeing the scene of a car wreck that claimed his friend's life was arraigned in Hempstead on November 6.

Thomas Mallin, 28, of Freeport, was driving his 2004 Subaru home from work in Manhasset at 3:30 p.m. Friday when he struck a tree on the west side of Valley Road.

A back-seat passenger, William Meier, 28, of Mastic, was ejected from the car and pronounced dead at North Shore Hospital later that evening.

Another unidentified front-seat passenger sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

According to police, Mr. Mallin fled the crash scene but was eventually arrested without incident and charged with leaving the scene of a fatal accident.

Nassau County prosecutors said that Mr. Mallin may still face additional alcohol-related charges.
