Two people were killed and one was critically injured in three car accidents across the city, cops said.
A motorcyclist died after he collided with a car making an illegal U-turn in Brooklyn, police said. James Johnson, 35, of East Flatbush, was northbound on Rockaway Parkway between Rutland Road and Winthrop St. in Brownsville when he smacked into a 1989 Oldsmobile that suddenly made the U-turn just before 1 p.m., police said. Johnson suffered severe head trauma and was declared dead at Brookdale University Hospital, cops said. The 85-year-old driver and his wife, a passenger, were taken to Brookdale for observation. The driver was ticketed for an illegal turn, cops said.
An elderly woman was killed walking across the street to her waiting daughter on Staten Island about 2:30 p.m., police said. Ann Capobianco, 85, of Midland Beach, was crossing New Dorp Lane near Eighth St. in New Dorp after buying vacuum-cleaner bags. As she approached her daughter's car, she was struck in the head and knocked to the pavement by the passenger-side mirror of an eastbound 2006 Chevy TrailBlazer. The 26-year-old driver, who was returning the SUV to the car dealership where he works, stayed at the scene and was not charged, cops said. Capobianco was pronounced dead at Staten Island University North hospital, police said.
In the third incident, a 78-year-old woman was critically injured when a box truck backed into her in a parking lot in the Bronx. The unidentified victim tried to beat the truck as it entered the lot at E. 233rd St. and Barnes Ave. in Wakefield, just before 4 p.m., cops said. She was rushed to St. Barnabas Hospital in critical condition, authorities said. The 31-year-old truck driver was not charged, cops said.
