City Finally Admits Plow Killed Girl

February 1, 2006

Maria Jimenez finally found out yesterday exactly how her 10-year-old daughter died as she played on a Brooklyn snowbank.

Cops told her Markita Weaver was struck and killed by a city Sanitation Department snowplow whose driver never saw the girl and didn't know he left her behind to die in Red Hook last Jan. 23.

Chief Michael Collins, an NYPD spokesman, said it took several months for cops to complete an investigation into the accident.

A crime lab recently determined that a hair found on a Sanitation Department snowplow was 'consistent' with Markita's - meaning a sanitation man assigned to drive the truck was likely the one who struck the girl.

Collins declined to release the name of the driver, saying the investigation was not closed.

The finding confirms what the family had suspected since Markita's sister found her dead with only her feet poking out of the snow.

The girl died of a massive head injury suffered when the plow struck her moments earlier, cops said.
